A place that is no coincidence
Some places are not made to stand out. They are made to stand the test of time. Kalan Boutique Stay is located in Žirovnica – a peaceful, culturally rich village in Gorenjska, where the gaze naturally stops at the mountains and thoughts stop competing with each other. This is not a destination that wants to be loud. This is a place that works quietly, but convincingly. Today's simply and functionally designed apartments are the result of a thoughtful renovation and upgrade of the original architecture of Franz Kalan's building. History is not shown here. It simply exists.
The story of the Kalan house
The house at Žirovnica 1 was built in 1905, at a time when architecture still carried meaning, weight, and a clear vision. Jugendstil was not a style for the masses – it was an expression of progress, self-confidence, and a sense of lasting beauty.
In this house, Franz Kalan, a visionary of his time, opened the first store in the Gorenjska region. It was not just a store, but a contact with the world and proof that even a small town can think big.
Today, the house no longer serves commerce. Today, it serves time, space, and the people who enter it.
Why Žirovnica
Žirovnica is not a tourist stage. It is a cultural foundation.
France Prešeren, Matija Čop and Fran Saleški Finžgar lived and worked here – personalities who shaped the Slovenian language, thought and identity. This energy is not written on signs, but is felt in the peace of the place and in the relationship to the space.
Žirovnica is not in the immediate center of the happening, but it is thoughtfully placed between the most beautiful corners of Slovenia. Close enough to easily reach them, and secluded enough to truly disconnect.
Architecture and respect for heritage
At Kalan, we didn't build something new. We consciously decided to take a more challenging path – to preserve and upgrade.
The renovation of the house was not a matter of trend, but of attitude. Every intervention, every material and every detail has its own reason. Modern comfort is present, but never at the expense of the character of the building. In doing so, we also consciously chose a more environmentally responsible path. Preserving, renovating and breathing new life into an existing house means respecting the space, history and environment in which we live.
This is not a reconstruction. This is a continuation of the story.
